Talk Your Way Into Mental Health

In 1853, English psychiatrist Walter Cooper Dendy introduced a revolutionary noninvasive therapy that physicians could use to help treat patients with neurological disorders. He called it “psychotherapeia.”

The technique involved challenging a patient’s core beliefs using conversation to help them learn new, more proactive ways of behaving. His method is still in use today, but it goes by the name psychotherapy or talk therapy. And it is (thankfully!) much more evolved than it was in the nineteenth century.

Earlier forms involved hypnotism, and, in many cases, a great deal of—for lack of a better term—bullpoop. In the early twentieth century, Sigmund Freud emerged as a leader of psychoanalysis. But, his theories had no empirical underpinnings. He believed that dreams had meanings, and the human mind had three layers that influence behavior—id, superego, and ego. You can call this more evolved bullpoop. Yet his work was heralded as revolutionary and drastically influenced the emerging field of psychotherapy.

Early psychotherapists saw the value of talk therapy though they did not fully understand its mechanics. When scientists learned that the brain was plastic, the value of conversation became better understood. Learning to think new thoughts equals changes in brain chemistry internally, which results in new automatic behaviors developed externally.

Today, cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), is one of the most popular forms of noninvasive therapy used in psychotherapy. It’s a training technique that allows patients to identify unhealthy behavioral patterns and shift them by reprogramming thoughts, which lead to a change in actions. CBT can also produce results for patients with mental illness. The tactics it teaches can be used by anyone who wants to shift negative thinking on-demand.
